Silvie Rackham

“I was drawn to Northern Roots because Urban Farms are super special places. They produce nutrient dense food for local communities, provide space for people to connect to each other and the land, whilst increasing biodiversity and helping to mitigate the climate crisis. The North has a history of innovation and hard graft. Northern Roots is an innovative project and attracts lovely hardworking people. Together we (the team, volunteers, and other participants) are working to bring the urban farm to life.” Silvie, Community Grower

Silvie is a Community Grower at Northern Roots. Her previous roles have centred around people, place and food, from landscape architecture to community engagement. Silvie previously worked across Oldham delivering growing and cooking projects with local communities, where she saw the restorative powers of connecting people to food and nature. She was inspired to go and learn about how local communities could produce food for themselves.

Silvie began a Grower traineeship at an Urban Farm in Leeds where she learnt the ropes of producing fruit and veg for the local community in the form of a weekly Community Supported Agriculture Veg Box. Prior to joining Northern Roots Silvie grew at a Community Garden in Bradford, producing food for the local community, cafes and grocers.

Silvie is interested in seed sovereignty and loves saving seeds!
