Northern Roots exists to transform neglected land, connect communities and create opportunities for all to grow.

We believe that urban green spaces are inherently valuable places.  If harnessed consistently and professionally they can alleviate the growing burden on health, social care, education, justice and emergency response budgets, while also creating growth by building skills, climate resilience, jobs, community and prosperity.

The Northern Roots model has been developed as a blueprint. A model that can be applied to similar spaces across the UK and beyond. Our industrial towns are surrounded by green spaces like Northern Roots. We are demonstrating how these forgotten places can nourish our families and imaginations, breathing new life into our neighborhoods.

Our unique partnership with Oldham Council has enabled us to establish the Northern Roots charity and begin to bring this post-industrial green space back into use as both a community asset and a visitor destination.

We are purposefully doing this in a way that unleashes and showcases the energy and creativity of our communities at every step. We empower people to participate in and shape the Northern Roots project, to bring their ideas and energy to the unfolding of a long-term evolving project.

Together, we are building community, health, connection, pride, hope and opportunities for all.
