Snipe Clough Farm

Snipe Clough Farm is being developed using organic agroforestry techniques to mimic the conditions of a forest. We are growing rows of perennial trees and shrubs that produce highly nutritious crops. You’ll be able to spot medlars, damsons, quinces, raspberries, tayberries, loganberries, seabuckthorn, hazel and hostas. 

Between the perennial rows we plant annual crops like wheat, cabbage and carrots. The annuals are nourished and sheltered by the perennials. Everything works together. 

Snipe Clough Farm also features a barn and five commercial grade polytunnels. Peek inside and you’ll find things like tomatoes, chillis, aubergines and okra.

Our harvest is then transported 200 metres to the Welcome Building kitchen, where it’s crafted into the freshest seasonal fare for our Café and Shop. Food steps, not food miles.

The name Snipe Clough Farm is inspired by the historical name of the area. Snipe Clough Farm was once a valley, and a coal mine. Later, the valley was filled in, and it became allotments, stables, and a school playing field.  

We grow more than food here. We also grow businesses, skills and community.  Some of our partner businesses, like Ysdraggil Forge are based at Snipe Clough Farm. Our dedicated team of environmental volunteers have played a critical role in establishing the farm. And this autumn, together, we will create a new community gathering shelter, built using timber from the site. In future we plan to expand Snipe Clough Farm by a further 6 acres.

Everyone is welcome on Snipe Clough Farm. Please follow safety signage and stick to pathways. Under 18s must be accompanied at all times. We have pathways for the public, but we also have routes for tractors and farming vehicles, please be aware of moving vehicles and follow staff instructions for your safety.  Well behaved dogs on short leads are also welcome; please pick up after your dogs.
