“I’ve recommended volunteering at Northern Roots to many people.  I keep badgering them to come. It’s absolutely amazing for an industrial town like Oldham to have a project like this right in the middle of it.”

Simon, Environmental Volunteer

We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities here at Northern Roots including environmental, community gardening, farm and welcome volunteers.

No previous experience is required, simply a passion to contribute to our values, mission and community. In return we support our volunteers to build skills and confidence.

Applications are currently closed for volunteering.  The best way to stay up to date is through our social media or our newsletter, which you can sign up to here.

So why volunteer with us?

  • You can meet new people and make new friends. Our volunteers and staff are a friendly bunch. Everyone gets a warm welcome.
  • You can learn new skills – from woodworking to landscaping, food growing to wildlife identification.
  • You can play a key role in welcoming visitors to Northern Roots and telling the story of the site and charity.
  • You can help to shape the future direction of Northern Roots.
  • Volunteering is great for your mental health. It can reduce stress, boost confidence and increase happiness.

What our volunteers say…

“l’ve learned how to plant garlic, which has reignited my passion for growing food. I don’t usually grow anything over the winter, but this has made me think actually, I could grow stuff in winter as well. Volunteering is also a bit of respite because I’m a carer for one of my kids. This helps give me a good break.”
Flora

“I wanted to join this year and it’s been great. I’ve enjoyed it. The people have been brilliant, staff are nice, everything’s brilliant.”
John

“I’ve learned teamwork, planting, mulching, weeding, planting hedges, and I’m hoping to learn woodwork.”
Gill
