Heritage

Visit Northern Roots and discover the rich history underfoot.

Take a stroll on a Roman road, or cycle along Tip Road, a forgotten Victorian railway line used to transport coal. Relax in our Community Garden, the former site of Brook Mill, built at the height of the 19th century Industrial Revolution.

Discover evocative placenames like Cherry Valley, Sheepwashes Brook, and Strawberry Gardens, and fascinating individuals like Mary Higgs, who founded the Beautiful Oldham Society here in 1902.

After forty years of being used, in part, as the local rubbish tip, the 160-acre site has been reclaimed by nature, and the Northern Roots charity is re-purposing the land to benefit local people while restoring nature.

As Northern Roots grows, we’re embracing heritage and drawing inspiration for the future from the stories of Oldham’s past.
