The BIG Viking Takeover at Northern Roots

Saturday 30th August, 11am – 4pm – FREE EVENT

Have you heard of the legend of Alda? Alda was a Viking who established a settlement named Aldehulme (now Oldham) in 865. Oldham was part of the Viking “Danelaw” and was under Viking control for generations after the fierce Battle of Hartshead. Now the legend of Alda returns, and the Vikings are back in Oldham!! They’ve laid siege to Northern Roots and set up camp, so why don’t you come for a visit?

Have a go at archery or watch spellbinding Viking combat!  The warriors may even let you try out a sword or spear or feel just how heavy their mail and helmets are.

The Viking warriors may grab your attention with their ferocious battles, but you can also experience Viking crafts in the Viking village. From weaving to woodworking, the villagers will be happy to share their craft skills with you and show you exactly what life is like in a Viking village.

11am: Village and heritage crafts open till 4pm.

11am to 1pm: Make your Own Viking Helmet. Free craft activity for children.

1pm: Archery display.

1.30pm: Weapons display.

3pm: Battle commences!

4pm: Event closes.

The BIG Viking Takeover is a FREE event. Everyone is welcome.

Viking Food Market

Being a Viking is hungry work. Check out what we’ve got at our selective Viking Food Market…

  • Mouthwatering smoked meats, burgers, smoked sausages and Gyros from Damien’s Kitchen – fit for a Viking fresh off the battlefield.
  • Freshly ground specialty coffee, teas, delicious bakes from Brewd MCR.
  • Cool down with Kaddy’s Ice Cream

Although the Vikings never tasted a matcha latte, Gyros or a 99p ice cream, but we’re sure they would have loved them!

Ydalir Vikings

Ydalir Vikings is the Manchester group of The Vikings, the UK’s oldest and largest Dark Age re-enactment society. Our events show life in Viking age Britain and includes combat displays and demonstrations of domestic crafts.

In Norse mythology “Yew Dales” was the home of Ull the winter god and was eternally damp. As we are based in Manchester, a place also known for rainfall, we chose Ydalir Vikings as an appropriate name.

Dreaded Mead

Mead is the oldest known alcoholic beverage. The oldest bottle found in Europe dates back to 2500bc, and apparently could still be consumed today (not that we are sure how much you would want to!) Dreaded Mead is a family run business aiming to bring mead into the modern age and for everyone’s enjoyment (not just viking enthusiasts!)

Grab a bottle to try or as a unique gift at The BIG Viking Takeover! Visit Dreaded Mead’s website.
