Mushroom Foray at Northern Roots

Thursday 2nd October, 1pm – 3pm

Join local forager Josh for a mushroom foray at Northern Roots.

A mushroom foray is where you search for and learn about mushrooms in their natural habitat. Led by self-taught mushroom forager Josh, you’ll join a small, friendly group and explore the Northern Roots woodland and meadows on the lookout for unique fungi.

You could find species such as Parrot Waxcaps, Inkcaps, Blushing Amanita or Amythest Deceiver.

You’ll learn how to correctly identify mushrooms based on their unique characteristics and learn about the important role and function they play in the ecosystem. Learn about the benefits of foraging mushrooms and the edible and medicinal qualities of each species. Please note we will not be eating the mushrooms found on this walk.

Meet Josh

Josh’s foraging journey began while hiking around Saddleworth, where he learnt to identify wild plants and turned them into jams and teas.

Josh went on to study Biology at Portsmouth University, dedicating his learning to fungal ecology and identification. Now back in Oldham, Josh hopes to make mycology (the study of fungi) accessible to local people, with a mission to foster deeper understanding of fungi and why they’re important to healthy ecosystems, and inspire appreciation for our planet.
