Sunday 14th September 1-2:30pm
Join our local Heritage Champions for a guided heritage walk at Northern Roots. To mark Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history, we’ll be exploring the theme of architecture and heritage.
From Robert Thatcher’s majestic 19th century Brook Mill that once stood proudly on the site, to the beautiful new Visitor Centre we are currently building, let our Heritage Champions take you on a journey from the past into the future. A journey through time—Roman roads and industrial mills, memories of days out at Strawberry Gardens – to today’s reimagined landscape.
As we explore this evolving site, each stop unveils how the past and present shape a sustainable future rooted in nature. Discover how this once industrial terrain is coming full circle, returning to its countryside origins as a vibrant visitor destination that celebrates architecture, biodiversity, and community regeneration. How we are creating inspirational buildings, spaces and opportunities for people to connect around food, growing, nature, learning, creativity, sport, work and play, and transforming uncared for space into a destination that is ‘of’ the local community, but for everyone.
We are delighted to be working with a small and brilliant team of local Heritage Champions as part of our current National Lottery Heritage Fund project. Our Heritage Champions have been tasked with researching the natural, industrial and social heritage of the Northern Roots site, so it can be brought to life for new audiences.
From Ruins to Rebirth is free but has a limited number of places and must be booked via Eventbrite.
