Heritage Walk with ‘My Northern Roots’ Podcast

event details

Friday 13th September, 2 – 3:30pm

Northern Roots, Kings Road, Oldham, OL8 2BJ

Did you know that the Northern Roots site is full of history and fascinating stories?

Join us as we walk along Roman roads and Victorian Railway lines and explore where the world’s largest cotton mill once stood tall. Walk along Snipe Clough and learn about the Beautiful Oldham Society and the May Day parades they would host. Hear about Strawberry Gardens, a well known petting farm and café that sat on this site a century ago.

Going back even further, we’ll learn about the fossil forest which was termed ‘The Wonder of Europe’. Large fossils of tree were formed 300 million years ago and from this discovery the Oldham Microscopical & Natural History Society was created, which still meets today.

On this heritage walk, we will be joined by Matt Dean, the host of ‘My Northern Roots’ podcast. Matt is passionate about all things Oldham, we’ll listen to parts of his podcast episodes as we explore the site. Matt is passionate about all things Oldham, and would love to hear your own heritage stories and experiences that make up Oldham’s history.

This heritage walk features as part of the 2024 Oldham Histories Festival, which celebrates people, places, buildings and stories across the borough. See their full programme of events and activities here.
