Create your own Herbarium – Family Thursday

Thursday 14th August, 10:30am – 12:30pm

Have you ever seen a flower so beautiful, you wanted to keep it forever? In this workshop, we’ll show you how!

Come for a walk at Northern Roots, collect leaves, flowers and grasses, and learn how to save them in your very own herbarium.

A herbarium is a collection of preserved plant specimens. Invented by Italian doctor and botanist Luca Ghini in the early 16th century, it is a method of pressing and drying plants and mounting them on paper, a technique that enables their preservation for scientific study.

In this family-friendly workshop you will learn how to identify what you’ve collected, how to press your plant specimen, make notes, label and present it.

This session is suitable for children for aged 5 to 12 and their families. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets cost £3 per child and are free for adults.

Gallery Oldham – Natural History Collections

Did you know that Gallery Oldham has been collecting artworks and objects since 1883 and is still collecting today? The Natural History Collection contains over 80,000 natural history specimens, including plants, animals and geology. These specimens originate not just from Oldham but also from much further afield.

Many of the collections are associated with the membership of the Oldham Microscopical and Natural History Society and Field Club which was founded in 1864 and still meets today.
