Arts and culture at northern roots
Creating bold, surprising and high-quality art and performances that brings local communities and visitors together.
“Northern Roots offers a wonderful opportunity to bring together communities and visitors through growing, creative, educational and therapeutic programmes. I’m excited to explore how arts experiences can enhance and place a spotlight on the work taking place on our site, fostering a deeper connection between people and the natural world.” Catherine Waddington, Creative Strategist
Catherine is the Creative Strategist for Northern Roots, bringing over 25 years of experience across the cultural sector. Her career spans arts management, festival organisation, and independent consultancy, with a focus on creative partnerships.
After working on the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, Catherine developed a passion for arts events and festivals. Since then, she has held roles with organisations including Abandon Normal Devices, Freedom Festival, FutureEverything, Greenwich and Docklands Festivals, Imperial War Museum North, Light Up The North and London 2012 Olympics. She has also contributed to major cross-sector initiatives such as Liverpool Capital of Culture and We Play (the North West Cultural Olympiad programme).
Originally from Trafford, Catherine spent several years in London before returning to Greater Manchester, making Stockport her home as she reconnected with her roots in the North. She has joined the Northern Roots team to drive forward the arts and culture strategy, build partnerships, and shape an ambitious creative programme.
Outside of work, Catherine is learning pottery and serves on the board of IOU Creation Centre.
