‘’My initial idea of what is achievable at Northern Roots has been blown out of the water. The concept of community driven land management, particularly improving degraded land and the problem-solving elements of the Northern Roots project really appeals to me. I’ve worked in many countries and discussed problems of habitat loss and climate change, but I’ve yet to see a project like this.’’ Simon, Northern Roots Ranger
Simon has spent his entire adult life studying and improving the health of trees and forests. Working as a tree surgeon for 10 years, at age 31 Simon began his degree in Forestry Management and progressed to a MSc in Entomology. He travelled to the USA and southeast Asia to study invasive pests, and has experience working as an arborist in Sweden, Denmark, Australia, and New Zealand. Simon is particularly passionate about tree health, plant diseases, invasive species, and now brings his diverse expertise to Northern Roots.
Simon’s work is varied and can include improving ecology on site, monitoring tree health, counting butterfly species, meeting local historians and working with young people and volunteers.
In his spare time, Simon is reading up on the latest science publications, or is exploring local green spaces while walking his three dogs.
