10,000 Steps Around the World at Northern Roots

Lingua Franca World Community CIC and Northern Roots have partnered to create Ten Thousand Steps Around the World, a unique event celebrating the natural world and our relationship with it.

Ten Thousand Steps Around the World will take place at Northern Roots, which is creating the UK’s largest urban farm and eco park on 160-acres of stunning green space, ten minutes from Oldham town centre.  The event has been devised by Lingua Franca World Community CIC  as a walking and arts experience, taking art out into green spaces and encouraging audiences to get active. It will take place on Saturday 28th May 2022 as part of GM Walking Festival 2022.

Ten Thousand Steps Around the World has commissioned ten diverse artists from Oldham and Greater Manchester. In the spirit of discovery, we won’t reveal the artists prior to the event.  On the day, audiences will be taken on a guided journey in small groups through the natural world of the Northern Roots site, encountering a range of diverse creative performances and installations as they go. The theme is Human: Nature.

So book your place, get your walking boots on, and discover an urban wilderness in the heart of Oldham. Step into the wild and be surprised and delighted by our artists.  We look forward to welcoming you.

Background information

Ten Thousand Steps Around the World was devised by Lingua Franca World Community CIC (LFWC) which successfully applied to Arts Council England for funding for the first stage of the project – creative commissions for 10 artists.

LFWC’s mission statement is to raise the visibility and income of professional creative freelancers from diverse communities through arts and heritage projects which elevate understanding and collaboration between communities.

Northern Roots is working in partnership with LFWC to produce Ten Thousand Steps Around the World.  Funding to produce the event has been made possible by the UK government’s Community Renewal Fund.

The Northern Roots charity is currently developing a number of arts and culture pilot projects for 2022, and a strategic vision for arts and culture at Northern Roots.
